Access Statement

We aim to provide an enjoyable experience to all of our guests and to maximise accessability within the constraints of the building we use.

Our written access statement  contains details of the building and accommodation and the services we provide written from an access point of view. Please continue reading if you wish to know the details of this.

We are situated on the A259 coast road east of Worthing town centre, which is a 10 minute walk.

There is a main bus route through to Portsmouth and Brighton. The main railway station is a five minute car journey. There is a Taxi rank at the station.

Cars may be parked outside Bensons on the road. There are some time restrictions, however, we can provide visitors permits for those guests choosing to leave their vehicles parked for the day. We are in Zone L and the permits allow all day parking in that Zone only.

There is a double gate at the approach to the path leading to the house. The latch is on the inside of the gate on the right which is pushed down. The gates open inwards.

There is a 9 cm step up to the path which is paved up to the ramp leading to the front door. The path is a little uneven. The threshold to the front door is 11 cm high. The door is 840mm wide. the door bell is on the door frame on the left hand side at approximately shoulder level. There is a knocker in the middle of the door at head height. 

Once inside the door you are in the porch where there is another door leading to the reception area. This door is number coded for security. Guests will be provided with this code once they have checked in. Arrangements will be made for this door to be accessed for those partially sighted or blind.

Once in the reception area there is a table and chair on the right of the hallway for checking in.

On the left is the door to the breakfast room. There is a wooden threshold which is 14 cm deep and is raised by approximately 1 cm. The door is 840mm wide and is held open at breakfast time. There are three dining tables in the middle of the room with chairs either side (2 people per table). There is a buffet table behind the door as you enter the breakfast room and a cereal bar on the other side of the room on the left hand side of the fireplace. Asssitance at breakfast will be given where requested.

• There are no guest rooms at ground floor level.

All bedrooms are on the first floor. Access to the Amber Room is via 15 steps to the half landing. The hand rail is on the left side of the stairs. There is a table with a lamp and a handbell at the top of these stairs on the right and the Amber Room door is just beyond that straight ahead. There is a bathroom door adjacent to this on the left which is private.

The door to the Amber Room is 680mm wide.

The Coronet Room and the French Room are accessed at the top of the main stairs where there are 3 more steps in the opposite direction from the main stairs. There is a banister and hand rail for all stairs and for the corridor leading to the Coronet Room and the French Room. These rooms are both on the right hand side. The width of these doors is 830mm. There is no lift available. Beyond the French Room is another bedroom which is private.

Each bedroom has:

• Single leaf door which opens inwards and are fitted with spring loaded door closers. 
• Locks are standard key operated.
• Cordless kettles.
• Flooring is fixed and slip resistant in bedrooms and bathrooms.
• Shower head is height adjustable.
• The Amber Room has a shower over a bath which is a standard step in bath. 
• The shower cubicles have raised thresholds.
• Televisions operated by remote contol.
• Some power points are located at waist height.
• Bedside lamps.
• Additional floor standing lamps with overhead lights for reading.
• Audible fire alarms only.

In addition:

The Guest House does not have an induction loop. For deaf or hard of hearing guests, arrangements will be made to wake them during the night should the fire alram sound.

There are fridges in the rooms where guests can store persihables or medicines.

Menus can be made available in large print if requested.

The entire building, including all bedrooms, are strictly non smoking. Guests are premitted to smoke in the front garden where an ash tray will be provided.

There is a house cat, Millie, therefore pets can not be accepted (see below about Guide Dogs).

Assistance with moving luggage and belongings will be provided if required.

Guide Dogs- can only be accommodated with their owners in the Amber Room. They must be kept on a lead at all times whilst out of the room.
